MATANGI/MAYA/MIA
DOGWOOF 8/10 Fast-moving biopic of london-born tamil singer and rapper
This cut-and-paste biopic of Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam is as extraordinary, as infuriating and as chaotically brilliant as its subject. Steven Loveridge, an old art-school friend, marshals home movies, TV clips and casually filmed backstage footage, following her from south London council estate to a starring role at the 2012 Superbowl (via Justine Frischmann’s basement), exploring notions of cultural dislocation, radical chic and accusations of hypocrisy. Celebs like Spike Jonze and Madonna pop up, but the most fascinating moments are interviews with relatives in London and Sri Lanka. Extras: 7/10. Previously unseen footage from MIA’s first-ever live performance, featurettes, behind-the-scenes, iTunes exclusives.
