SUB POPTASTIC!

-

I wrote in a couple of months ago lamenting the lack of new artists being featured on the cover of the magazine. When I tore open my subscription packaging for the November edition, out dropped the CD. I picked it up and was heartened by the SPF 30 title proudly printed in bold lettering. A full CD dedicated to Sub Pop! Absolutely fantastic, this has simply been the best CD bundled with the mag.

Sub Pop is my favourite label. Like many, I first became aware of them when I was going through my teenage Nirvana obsession, but Sub Pop has brought me so much since – including Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, which I first discovered in Uncut. Paul Smith, via email

…I enjoyed listening to this month’s Sub Pop CD, and was pleasantly surprised by the variety on it. I always knew Sub Pop wasn’t a one-trick pony, but I still didn’t expect such an eclectic comp. It also seemingly functioned as a combination of the ‘new music’ and ‘themed’ approach to your CDs. I, myself, find merit in both, but prefer the themed ones. New music CDs are nice to listen to while reading the magazine, and are a good way to discover new bands, but they are ultimately disposable. Of course I collect them, but you won’t catch me pulling out, say, #2014 04 for a new spin – as opposed to Sounds Of The New

West, the Acid Daze comp, the Dylan/Bowie/Clash tributes, or the curated ones. Kostas Evmorfiadis, via email

Glad everyone enjoyed the Sub Pop CD, too! Are there any other labels you’d like us to invite to curate a CD…?
