JAAKKO EINO KALEVI
Dissolution DOMINO
7/10
Domino’s first Nordic signing continues his synthpop time travels Like his fellow electro-pop maverick Matthew Dear, Finland’s Jaakko Eino Kalevi has a knack for channelling David Bowie right at the point when he developed his jones for Ralf and Florian. A seven-song follow-up to last year’s Out Of Touch, Dissolution sees Kalevi travel his V2 Schneider from the title track’s watery synth-funk to the limpid “Neon Lights”-like “Uutiset” before closing with “Conceptual Mediterranean (Part 2)”, an exercise in Tangerine Dream-like atmospherics enlivened by a horn sound not unlike Bowie’s sax. While the two songs featuring singer Yu-ching Huang come off like The Knife minus their edge, the rest demonstrate Kalevi’s savvy at blending electronic modes both past and present.
