JERRY LEGER
Time Out For Tomorrow LATENT
7/10
Toronto troubadour on familiarly reliable form
The admirably prolific Leger’s 12th album in 15 years finds him further honing the articulate, hookladen Americana that continues to draw comparisons with the work of his fellow Canuck and constant cheerleader Ron Sexsmith. This is country pop from the top drawer, from the jangling doomed romance of “Justine”, to the off-kilter saloon waltz of “Read Between
The Lines”, to the rustic toe-tapper “Tomorrow On My Mind”. Cowboy Junkie Michael Timmins’ unfussy production gives the songs space to breathe, as Leger charts a persuasive course along warm, laconic roads previously travelled by Glen Campbell and Nick Lowe.
