Benesse House, Naoshima
JAPAN
Part modern art museum, part boutique hotel, Benesse House was designed by noted Japanese architect Tadao Ando, following a concept of the ‘coexistence of nature, art, and architecture’. The striking modernist property is both work of art in itself and a fantastic exhibition space, with wide hallways, oversize atriums, and vast floorto-ceiling windows designed to frame the artworks featured in permanent and special exhibitions. The hotel marks a focal point of Naoshima island - Japan’s so-called ‘artypelago’, dotted with works of contemporary art, design and sculpture - a visit to the island and stay here is a must for any culture vulture visiting Japan.
