Keep the pressure on for Heathrow

-

SO “No Ifs No Buts” David Cameron has delayed his decision on whether or not to approve a third runway at Heathrow.

This delay is for at least six months, but one suspects it will be longer because the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London (Zac Goldsmith) is a staunch opposer to expansion.

Mr Goldsmith’s objections one feels are based not so much on the huge environmental impact that a third runway would create (we already have appallingly poor air quality locally) but rather on the severe impact this project would have on property prices in and around the exclusive area of Richmond where he and his well heeled chums reside.

Our council leader and his cabinet are allegedly opposed to a third runway at Heathrow but they will find it very difficult to go against Mr Cameron if he approves it.

There is always the possibility of a quid pro quo element to soften the impact, such as some changes to the HS2 project to lessen the impact on the north of the borough where the Hillingdon cabinet and the leader are located.

Mr McDonnell MP and Shadow Chancellor has steadfastly refused to budge on his opposition to a third runway, however I note that both employers and trade unions want a third runway at Heathrow.

The exodus of large numbers of Labour’s top donors will make the party even more reliant on Trade Union support.

All of these shenanigans do not bode well for residents, including Hayes where I reside.

Pollution, noise, congestion on the roads and the very real increased risk of a plane crashing into populated areas are just a couple of things that we should worry about.

I applaud all those who have taken
