FIND OUT HOW HILLINGDON’S PRIMARY SCHOOLS COMPARE

BELMORE Primary Academy is the best primary school in Hillingdon , newly released figures have shown.

The school achieved well above average progress scores for Key Stage 2 in mathematic­s and above average scores in reading and writing.

Schools are awarded scores reflecting their pupils’ progress between Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 exams in three key subjects, taken at the ages of seven and 11.

At the other end of the scale, St Catherine Catholic Primary School was bottom of the progress score rankings for last year.

Belmore Primary Academy, in Hayes , is a sponsor-led academy which accepts children aged three to 11.

It has 624 registered pupils. Of them, 90 were 11-year-olds eligible to take Key Stage 2 exams at the end of the 2017/18 school year: 48 boys and 42 girls.

Pupils are expected to achieve scores of at least 100 in their Key Stage 2 exams. At Belmore Primary Academy, the average grade awarded for reading was 109, for grammar, punctuatio­n and spelling 110, and for maths 109.

The results mean that 83% of pupils achieved the expected standard across the three subjects, and 28% were high achievers.

As a result, the school achieved progress scores of 2.7 for reading, 2 for writing and 5.4 for mathematic­s, recognisin­g the improvemen­t students achieved in their final years of primary education.

Scores of zero reflect average progress across schools, with positive and negative scores awarded for better or worse improvemen­t in students’ grades.

Factors in the school’s impressive performanc­e included its better than average pupil to teacher ratio (20.2 pupils to each teacher) for the area.

Which were the best performing schools?

The top 10 schools in Hillingdon, according to their progress scores, were:

1 Belmore Primary Academy (2.7 in reading, 2.0 in writing and 5.4 in mathematic­s)

2 (joint) William Byrd Primary Academy (reading: 1.6, writing: 2.5, maths: 3.3)

2 (joint) Heathrow Primary School (reading: 2.1, writing: 1.3, maths: 4.0)

4 (joint) St Mary’s Catholic Primary School (reading: 1.8, writing: 1.5, maths: 3.7)

4 (joint) Holy Trinity CofE Primary School (reading: 3.1, writing: 1.0, maths: 2.9) 4 (joint) Guru Nanak Sikh Academy (reading: 2.2, writing: 0.0, maths: 4.8)

7 Laurel Lane Primary School (reading: 2.1, writing: 1.1, maths: 3.3)

8 Rosedale Primary School (reading: 0.4, writing: 2.9, maths: 2.6)

9 Deanesfiel­d Primary School (reading: 1.4, writing: 1.4, maths: 2.7)

10 Harlyn Primary School (reading: 3.3, writing: -0.5 and maths: 2.4)

What about the worst schools?

St Catherine Catholic Primary School and St Andrew’s CofE Primary School received the lowest average progress scores in Hillingdon.

In mathematic­s St Catherine was awarded well below average progress scores and it was awarded below average scores for writing.

And the lower performing schools?

The worst five schools in Hillingdon, according to their average progress scores, were:

3: Bishop Winnington-Ingram CofE Primary School (reading: -2.4, writing: -2.1, maths: -0.6)

4: Pinkwell Primary School (reading: -2.2, writing: -0.5, maths: -1.6)

5: Field End Junior School (reading: -1.0, writing: -0.9, maths: -1.0)

Overall pupils across Hillingdon achieved above average Key Stage 2 results for England.

Average scores of 106 in reading, 108 in grammar, punctuatio­n and spelling and 106 in mathematic­s meant the local authority ranked 21st of England’s 152 authoritie­s. This was a rise from 29th in 2016-17.
