‘We need to take a look at ourselves’

-

DEAN BRENNAN and his players will need plenty of mirrors as he reflects on Wealdstone’s 3-2 loss at Oxford City.

The Stones boss was philosophical after defeat – his team still lead National League South by four points with two games in hand – but said despite his team being okay, “okay is not good enough”.

He wants his players to “all take a look at themselves” in terms of their attitude and application while he said he needs to take a look at himself too.

Wealdstone trailed 2-0 early in the second-half thanks to two lapses at corners when players lost their men and allowed Oxford to strike.

However, they battled back to 2-2 before conceding a goal, which caused much frustration in the camp.

“It’s the ups and downs of this business,” said Brennan.

“The frustrations with it, the elation with it, but we can’t concede the goals we conceded and expect to win football matches.

“They scored twice at the start of the second half against the run of play.

“That’s what happens when you let your guard down and come with the wrong mentality.

“What we’ve got to do now is bounce back in the next games and get a couple of wins.”

There were positives, though, and he added: “The response we gave was a good one – we showed we can play the other side of the game and be physical too.

“But we missed some great chances and got in some great areas even at 2-2 and even at 0-0. Our end product probably wasn’t there.

“Maybe rotation is important this time of the year and I didn’t do that. I have to look at myself and the players have to look at themselves too – to make sure their attitude and application is right.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose and I didn’t think we deserved to win either.

“That’s the business we are in. There’s good days and bad and for the majority of the season, 90%, we have had positive days.”
