HOLMES ON THE CASE

ENOLA HOLMES Netflix

■ THE game’s afoot again but with a difference as Sherlock’s younger sister takes centre stage in this action-packed film with female empowerment at its core. Milly Bobby Brown plays Enola who wakes up on her 16th birthday to find her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has mysteriously disappeared. While her older brothers Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Clafin) want to send her to finishing school, Enola determines to do some detective work of her own to try to find her missing mum and outwits her brothers as she uncovers a conspiracy involving a young aristocrat. Not one for Sherlockian purists perhaps, but this looks like good fun.

OLD FAVOURITES

CLASSIC MOVIES BBC Four, Thursdays, 8pm and on iPlayer

■ WITH little fanfare, BBC Four has started showing classic films of yesteryear on Thursday nights which are then available on iPlayer. The sublime wartime drama Casablanca has already been shown and coming up this week is David Lean’s sweeping epic Doctor Zhivago starring Julie Christie and Omar Sheriff. Against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution, a doctor finds himself torn between loyalty to his wife and his love for another woman.

COMIC REALITIES

UTOPIA Amazon Prime, from Friday

■ US remake of the cult British series from 2013 about a bunch of comic book geeks who become obsessed with an underground graphic novel which identifies them as targets of a sinister, secret government plot and gives them the unenviable task of saving the world. John Cusack, Sasha Lane and Rainn Wilson head the cast in this Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) scripted eight-parter.

KING OF FASHION

MCQUEEN BBC Two, Saturday, September 26, 9.45pm

■ IAN Bonhote and Peter Ettedgdui’s compelling documentary looks at the life and career of the maverick fashion designer Alexander McQueen, charting his rise from tailor to the enfant terrible of haute couture. Son of a teacher and a taxi driver, McQueen didn’t follow the conventional route into the industry but made a big impression with his bold, unconventional ideas, securing him the role of chief designer at Givenchy in 1996 having founded his own label in 1992. But behind the scenes were doubts, insecurities and an inability to cope with the pressures that came hand in hand with success, and the documentary doesn’t flinch in showing McQueen’s frailties alongside his brilliance.

RAINY DAYS

WEATHERING WITH YOU DVD, Blu-ray and digital from Monday, September 28

■ BEAUTIFULLY animated film from Makoto Shinkai (Your Name) in which teenager Hodaka leaves his isolated island home to move to Tokyo where he struggles to get by until he gets a job as a writer on an occult magazine. Torrential rain envelops the city for weeks but when Hodaka meets a mysterious, strong-willed girl named Hino he comes to realise she may possess the ability to stop the rain and free Tokyo from the deluge.

AN odd, magical film that will resonate with those feeling frustrated and trapped by the strange times we live in.
