DAILY MIRROR January, 1940: READERS’ TIPS ON OVERCOMING RATIONING PROBLEMS

-

Mrs R BROWN, of Hartley Road, Leytonstone:

“To economise on gas, bring potatoes to the boil. Lift them out of water and place in colander. Put greens in potato water, which should still be boiling. Place colander with potatoes over the saucepan and cover with tight- fifitting lid, thus cooking greens and steaming potatoes over one gas ring, using one saucepan.”

Miss BURNETT,

R L Stevenson Avenue, Bournemouth

“Try a pinch of salt when cooking apples. It brings out the flavour and less sugar is then required.”

Are your windows frozen? If so, read this hint from Mrs WASHBROOK, Pearson Street, Wolverhampton:

“Sprinkle a small amount of salt on the window leather when you clean the windows, and they will not freeze over again, and you’ll be able to polish them inside and out.”
