This month’s founders: Susanna and Adam Kittow
Tofuture Press Amersham
My vegan story
We were vegetarian for over 25 years before Susanna became vegan in 2009, followed by Adam. We started our vegan journey because we love all animals, and we didn’t want to be part of their exploitation. The environmental impact of eating meat and dairy was a big factor in going vegan to help preserve the beautiful world we live in.
Early inspiration
We always knew tofu was a superfood, but we really started to love and cook creatively with it after discovering how pressing it transformed the taste and texture. We hated wasting kitchen roll and the mess caused by pressing tofu under heavy objects — this inspired us to invent the Tofuture Press.
Tips for other start-ups
Perseverance is essential, when there are setbacks just pivot, keep going and believing. Follow a lean start-up, scale everything so you can try new ideas without over committing. The vegan community is incredible and provided us with support and feedback from the start so you’re in a good space.
The best thing about being vegan
Knowing that we are doing what we can to save the planet, having nothing to do with animal suffering, the delicious food and all the health benefits of eating plant-based. Also, all the inspirational people we interact with every day.
You’re stranded on an island. What one vegan product/treat would you want with you?
As biased as it sounds, it has to be a Tofuture Press! We invented it because we needed it so much in our lives. It would be annoying to be on an island with soggy tofu!
Fun fact
The idea to invent the Tofuture Press was conceived whilst convalescing from a trampolining accident in the garden. Adam’s broken rib meant he couldn’t get up to rescue a collapsed pile of pressing tofu and broken crockery.
What’s next
Our dream is to carry on promoting the versatility and deliciousness of tofu and spreading the gospel of how it needs to be pressed to everyone around the world!
