Sustainable tourism
FOR the conscientious traveller, there’s much to experience and celebrate across the U.s. traditional communities are now embracing the shift towards sustainability and environmental awareness, with eco-tourism options in every state, from wildlife
conservation initiatives to low-impact resorts.
GET FRESH
Follow Arizona’s Fresh Foodie Trail from the town of Mesa to the countryside beyond, and experience farmers’ markets, organic dining and pick-yourown produce. There’s a top craft brewery scene here, too, and look out for Mesa’s Food Truck Fridays.
SADDLE UP
Two million free-roaming mustangs once galloped the plains of the American west, but today less than 50,000 horses remain. Nevada's luxury Mustang Monument eco-ranch is home to 650 of these beautiful beasts, and a sanctuary for guests.
TURTLE TREKKING
The beautiful beaches of Martin County host nesting sea turtles from February until September. Sign up for a late-night Turtle Walk, led by the Hobe Sound Natural Wildlife & Nature Centre, to see logger head turtles lay their eggs. There are great dive and snorkelling spots, too.
PROTECT THE PRAIRIES
The American Prairie Reserve, a non-profit organisation, aims to create the continental United States’ largest nature reserve in northeastern Montana, with three million acres of grasslands roamed by reintroduced native animals, including the bison. The Reserve’s Kestrel Camp has five luxury safari-style suites and offers tours with biologists.
FROM FARM TO FORK
California’s Sonoma County has more than 425 wineries and is renowned for its farm-to-fork dining scene. The Single Thread restaurant and its accompanying inn is not to be missed, with Asian-inspired haute cuisine, and tasting menus featuring delights from the adjacent farm.
