Mayor reveals plans for Lincolnshire ‘Ice B&B’

-

SWEDEN’S Ice Hotel was famously the inspiration for the Ice Palace, fictional headquarters of Korean diamond magnate Gustav Graves in 007 film Die Another Day. Since opening its doors in 1990, the luxury establishment in the village of Jukkasjärvi has spawned dozens of copycat projects around the world. And now a Lincolnshire lord mayor has announced plans to build the world’s first Ice

B&B in the Lincolnshire seaside resort of Skegness.

According to councillor Athelstan Popkiss, Skeggy’s Frozen Haven Guest House will accommodate up to 10 holiday makers in 5 double bedrooms

made completely of ice. The walls, floors, ceilings, doors and windows will be completely fashioned from frozen water, as well as all the furniture and fittings.

“The Frozen Haven B&B is going to be one of the Seven Wonders of Lincolnshire,” he told local paper The East Lindsey Fedora. “Skegness already welcomes thousands of summer visitors from as far afield as Nottingham and Leicester, but our ice B&B is set to attract visitors from even further afield.”

“It’s going to put Skeggy well and truly on the map,” he added.

Building work on the groundbreaking hotel will begin this winter, and is expected to use almost 2000 tons of ice shipped 30 miles down the coast from Grimsby fish market. Once completed, it is hoped that the famous ‘bracing’ Skegness weather will keep the sub-zero establishment frozen solid through the summer months when the resort is at its busiest.

“There’s not a block of ice been laid yet, and we’ve already had a couple of dozen enquiries about bookings,” said Popkiss. “It’s going to be the most sought after accommodation on the Lincolnshire coast. We’re going to be booked solid.”

The mayor said that despite its unique architectural qualities, the Frozen Haven will operate a traditionally strict ‘no pets’ policy in line with most other Skegness boarding houses. Guests will also be required to vacate their accommodation after breakfast each day at 9:00am, and will not be allowed back on the premises until 5:30pm.

“My sister-in-law Mrs Edna Scabies will be in day-to-day charge of the Frozen Haven,” said Popkiss. “She is a seasoned landlady with over forty years’ experience running the Lincoln Coast Retreat Guest House, and I can think of nobody better to ensure the comfort of all the guests.”

Mrs Scabies has produced a list of rules which will be handed to each guest as they enter the ice B&B, setting out fines should any be broken. Food will not be allowed to be consumed anywhere in the B&B other than the ice-built dining room, and guests will not be allowed visitors in their room at any time.

“Patrons will be permitted one fourinch-deep bath every other day,” said Popkiss. “Obviously it will have to be cold water because the bath is made of ice and it would melt if the water was hot.”

“You’ll get a maximum of two sheets of Izal per toilet visit, one to wipe and one to polish, and anyone blocking the ice-bog pan will receive a £10 unblocking fine,” he added.
