ORNWALL SPECIAL ... 4-PAGE CORNWALL SPECIAL ... 4-PAGE CORNWALL SPECIAL ... 4-PAGE CORNWA

-

IT MAY come as a surprise, but there are no elephants in Cornwall. Despite there being six zoos and wildlife parks in the county, none of them boasts an elephant. And since 2016, when performing elephants were banned from circuses, the county has well and truly become an elephantfree zone. Any inhabitant of the county wishing to see one of the enormous, grey, trunked pachyderms will have to travel to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm just outside Bristol.

AND IF they want to see a polar bear, they will have to press on another 189 miles to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster.

BECAUSE

CORNWALL is Britain’s most southerly county. Or is it? According to astronomers, the terms ‘up’, ‘down’, ‘north’ and ‘south’ have no meaning in space. The position of an object is simply an artificial construct, one which can only be described relative to the position of an observer. So, whilst Cornwall appears to us to be the most southern UK county, to an alien observer on another planet, it may well be the most northerly one, with the Highlands of Scotland at the bottom.

TINS OF BEANS

CORNISH TIN COMPETITION

CORNWALL is famed for its tin mines – sites where the ore which yields the soft, malleable metal was extracted from deep underground. But in the mid-20th century, people started to realise that ‘tin’ cans were actually made from steel and aluminium. As a result, one by one the mines began to close.

Tin mines have taken their place in Cornish history, and in memory of their once proud story, we’re giving away four ‘tins’ of beans in this fantastic Tin Competition! Simply answer the following questions about tin and send in your answers.

1 Tin occupies the number 50 spot on a list of elements compiled by chemists. This list is available on mugs, T-shirts, posters and jigsaw puzzles. But what is it called?

a) the Premiership table b) the Periodic table c) the Times table

2 Mercury, Aluminium and Gallium are all metals which are silver in colour. But what colour is tin?

a) blue

3 The word ‘Tin’ features in the title of a Sky Atlantic drama starring Tim Roth about a former Metropolitan Police detective who gets a job with the Canadian police or something. What is it called?

b) pink

c) tin colour

b) Tin star

c) Tin foil

The first correct entry out of the hat will win four tins of beans which you can eat, or keep as a lasting testimony to the bygone Cornish mining industry. Send your entries to 4 Tins of Beans Competition, Viz Comic, PO Box 841, Whitley Bay, NE26 9EQ.
