Lights, elves, baubles – but no tree

-

CARDIFF council has come under fire for the lack of a tree during festivities on Thursday.

The tree, which is being shipped from China, will not be up until November 25.

A tree was installed for the lights switch-on last year, with insurance company Admiral sponsoring the one outside Cardiff Castle.

A Cardiff council spokesperson said: “The Christmas tree which will be at Cardiff Castle this year has been hired on a three-year lease through the UK company MK Illuminations.

“The artificial tree, sourced from China, is a 40m high, tree-shaped structure covered in golden baubles with all decorations and illuminations pre-attached.

“It will go on show on Friday, November 25, and should be a spectacular addition to Cardiff’s Christmas offering.”

Thursday night’s Step into Christmas event saw the city come to life with lights, elves, roller skat- ing baubles and Christmas puddings wandering the streets.

It was hailed as a success on social media, though some were annoyed by the absence of a tree.

Conservative councillor for Rhiwbina, Jayne Cowan, said: “I am bitterly disappointed that the council will not be displaying real Christmas trees in the city this year.

“[Council leader] Phil Bale should have had discussions with businesses to discuss sponsorship opportunities.”
