HAPPY ENDING FOR CUTHBERT

Under-fire Wales wing finishes ‘tough week’ in scoring form for the Blues

ALEX Cuthbert has revealed how he wanted to show people what he is made of after a tough week, as he reflected on a fine try-scoring display for Cardiff Blues.

The Wales wing came in for heavy flak in some quarters following last Saturday’s Six Nations defeat to England at the Principality Stadium.

There was also criticism of the Welsh management, from the likes of Shane Williams and Stuart Barnes, for selecting him in place of the injured George North.

But Cuthbert delivered the perfect response as he helped the Blues to a 57-20 league victory over Treviso, having been released by Wales to his region.

He set up one try with a blistering burst down the right and then produced a stunning solo effort to scorch over from near halfway in the final play of the game.

The 26-year-old received a standing ovation from the Arms Park crowd on both occasions and he also earned a warm reception from fans when he spoke to them in the club after the match.

“Obviously I’ve had a bit of a tough week and this game has been the highlight of it,” he said.

“I just want to get back out there, do as well as I can and just show people what I’m actually made of.

“Hopefully today, I did that. It’s the first game I’ve probably enjoyed for a while and it was great to get a result like that.”

The Blues ran in nine tries in all, pulling well clear after turning around with a narrow 17-13 interval lead.

“The first half was a bit slow, but in the second half we certainly showed what we are capable of,” said Cuthbert, who was one of eight try scorers for the Blues.
