‘SPREAD A LITTLE HAPPINESS’ CALL TO HONOUR APRIL

P EOPLE are being encouraged to carry out random acts of kindness in memory of murdered schoolgirl April Jones who would have been celebrating her 10th birthday this month.

A campaign launched on Facebook by the group “Our Little Welsh Princess April Jones” calls on people to “spread a little happiness” to honour April on Tuesday.

Writing on the Facebook group, a spokesperson from the group said: “April was a smiley, happy little girl touching hearts of millions worldwide.

“Join us and honour little April on what would have been her 10th birthday by performing a random act of kindness spreading a little happiness to make someone else smile.

“Any act of kindness great or small can make a positive impact on someone’s life. #MakeSomeoneSmile.”

Some suggestions have been made by the group to people looking for ideas about what random acts of kindness they can do in memory of April.

They include donating to the charity Missing People, making cakes or biscuits for neighbours or work colleagues, leaving flowers for nurses if visiting hospital, knitting a hat and giving it to a homeless person, and paying for the person’s shopping in front of you.

Five-year-old April was snatched from outside her home in Machynlleth, Powys, in October 2012 by paedophile Mark Bridger.

He was later sentenced to a whole life term for her abduction and murder.

Earlier this year, April’s family called for sex offenders to remain on the register for life.

After April’s death, Bridger was found to have accessed indecent images of youngsters on a computer at his home, just hours before he abducted April.

A petition, started by April’s sister Jazmin Jones, calls for measures in- cluding “harder sentences” for people caught with indecent images of children and pushes for internet companies to be “better policed regarding child abuse images”.

The petition, which now has more than 127,00 signatures, has won cross-party praise during a Westminster debate.

The UK Government has re- sponded to the petition, stating that the “UK has some of the toughest powers in the world to deal with sex offenders and those who continue to pose a risk will remain subject to notification for life”.

April’s mother Coral Jones previously said the family’s campaign had helped them deal with their grief.

She said: “It has helped because you have got something to focus on.

“We are not just helping ourselves but others and after so many people supported us it’s nice to be able to give something back.”

She added: “We want the law to be changed, that’s what we are fighting for – to help protect children and make sure paedophiles stay on the list for life.”
