TWIN TOWN – TWENTY YEARS LATER

- MARK REES Reporter newsdesk@walesonline.co.uk

IT’S arguably the greatest film ever made in or about Swansea, but can you believe that it has been 20 years – yes, 20 years – since Kevin Allen first introduced us to the likes of the Lewis twins and their adversary Bryn Cartwright?

It was April 1997 when the drugfuelled black comedy Twin Town hit our screens, and not only is it a classic film, but it also serves as a handy time capsule of the period, capturing locations across the city – along with a few in Port Talbot – for all prosperity.

With the sequel Tin Town currently in production, we thought it would be a good time to revisit some of the more iconic locations from the film to see just how much things are changed in the area.

There’s the high-speed joyride through Cromwell Street and on to Constitution Hill which opens the film, another moment of anarchy in a motor when Julian and Jeremy tear up the pitch of Bonymaen Rugby Club, and Terry’s arrival at Swansea Train Station where he delivers the “pretty ***** city” line.

Looking back, possibly the biggest changes can be seen in the area surrounding the Barons nightclub where Karaoke King Dai Reese ruled the stage.

The venue, along with the surrounding shops including Wimpy and the Going Places travel agents, are now long gone.

But there are other locations which look remarkably unchanged over the past two decades, as you can see on this page.
