POLITICIAN WINS FUZZ FACE-OFF

- JAMES MCCARTHY Reporter james.mccarthy@walesonline.co.uk

AWELSH politician has beaten Michael Eavis, Stormzy and Prince Harry to win the coveted Beard of Summer prize. Caerphilly AM Hefin David was praised by competition organisers the Beard Liberation Front for his “modern” beard.

The Labour politician joked that his win could be down to “Corbynisation”. and claimed his face fuzz was better than the party leader’s.

He said of his win: “If there are any engagements to fulfil I will fulfil them with enthusiasm.”

His political predecessor Jeff Cuthbert had “a very impressive beard”.

“Mark Drakeford said to me, ‘I see you have got a beard as well, it is good that we have continuity and growth,’” Mr David said.

“It’s just your average reasonably tidy beard. I’ve never had it be a talking point before. Perhaps it’s the Corbynisation of our politics?” Mr David said.

Quizzed on who had the beard, he insisted: “Well, me.”

“The early Corbyn was good but it best needs toning down,” Mr David said.

“The early beard of Corbyn was a lot nicer.”

Mr David took more than half the votes cast. Second place went to Cardiff University astrophysicist Peter Coles. He took more than 40%.

“It’s nice to have won such an esteemed poll,” Mr David said.

He’s now in with a chance of becoming the first Welsh winner of the December Beard of the Year award.

“Let’s fly the flag for Wales and do our best,” he said.

“I was in second place for Beard of Summer but there was a late surge, thanks to a group of Caerphilly constituents getting together and voting.

“I had put a post on Facebook saying I’d been shortlisted. “My campaign team did the rest.” The Beard Liberation Front’s Keith Flett congratulated Hefin.

“He stands out as someone who is perhaps changing the face of Welsh politics,” Keith said. Mr David’s was “not a hipster beard”.

“I suppose that would be pushing it, but it’s quite modern,” Mr Flett said. “If you compare it to Jeremy Corbyn’s, that is quite old style – he may have grown it on his allotment.”
