TEAM’S NEW STRIP
Rugby team bare all again in drive for body confidence
A FEMALE rugby team are getting their kit off to show that women of all shapes and sizes are beautiful and can play the sport.
It marks the second year that Cardiff University Women’s Rugby Club have bared all for a cheeky calendar – but it’s all in aid of a good cause.
Around 15 players took part in the photo shoot to raise money for CoppaFeel – a breast cancer charity that aims to make young people more aware of the disease.
But even though the players wanted to do their bit for the charity, they also wanted to show that it’s OK for women to be totally themselves in front of a camera.
So much so that they insisted on no airbrushing.
The team’s social secretary, Rosie Foley, said it was important for them to show that women should be confident in their own skin.
Rosie, 19, said: “We wanted the photographs to be as real as possible and to show real women, so there was no air brushing.
“A few of the girls were quite nervous about it at first but they got more confident as it went on.
“I think some of the girls struggled with the concept of body image before this so it really helped them.”
Even though it may have been a challenge for the new students at first, Rosie said they all started to embrace the experience around 20 minutes into the shoot.
The calendar features pictures of them doing line-outs, imitating kicks and getting changed in the dressing rooms.
Rosie said the team also had to fight the cold weather as the pictures were only taken about two weeks ago.
“It was quite chilly and the pictures were taken first thing in the morning.
“The ground was also o quite muddy on the day of f the shoot so the pictures s are quite realistic – but luckily it didn’t rain.”
The players, who are all aged between 18 and 21, used rugby balls to cover up some parts of their bodies.
Rosie said she’s “very proud” of them for getting involved in the h campaign.
She said the calendar also highlights that any woman can play rugby as those involved are of all shapes and sizes.
Last year’s calendar raised around £500 for CoppaFeel l and d the h team h hope to raise the same amount – if not more – from this year’s version.
The calendars cost £7 and can be bought from the team’s website: w w w . c a r d i f f s t u d e n t s . c o m/ activities/sport/ladiesrugby
