F OR many, opening door number one on the advent calendar and having that first taste of chocolate signals the true start of Christmas.

But that moment was almost ruined for this South Wales family, who made a disgusting discovery when opening the first few doors.

Mum Ceri Williams had bought each of her three children a festive calendar to open on December 1, and was placing them by the Christmas tree in preparation the day before.

But upon picking up the Justice League-themed collection of sweet treats for her eight-year-old son Danny, Ceri, 26, noticed something wasn’t quite right.

Ceri, from Nantymoel, Bridgend, said: “I could smell something funny, and I said to my friend Rebecca Adams, who was here ‘this t this doesn’t seem right’.

“I opened the first t door and there was s mould and fur all over r the chocolate. I have e never smelt anything g like it in my life.

“Danny was disgusted, , too. We’ve never seen n anything at all like this s before.”

She said she bought all l three advent calendars rs s from Poundland on Adare re e Street, Bridgend, a few ew w days before Halloween, n, , but they were all still in n date.

She explained: “I was s lucky enough Rebecca was s here and she drove us all l over the valley for about out t half an hour until we were e lucky to find a new one.

“I’m so grateful to her. . Danny would have been n so o upset if he’d woken up with- out an advent calendar.”

So has it put Ceri off Poundland altogether? She said: “I will go back but not for the food products or chocolate.

“If I hadn’t seen it first, Danny could have eaten it and it would’ve made him ill.”

Ceri said she got in touch with the store over Facebook and they are sending her a voucher as compensation.

A spokeswoman from Poundland told WalesOnline: “That’s clearly not as it should be. If Ceri gets in touch with where and when she bought it, we’ll investigate and she can return it to the store for a refund or replacement.”
