AYELLOW weather warning for snow has been issued for large parts of Wales. The Met Office said snow showers and longer periods of snow are expected on Tuesday.

The warning is in place between 12.05am and 11.55pm.

Travel delays on roads are possible, with forecasters warning some vehicles and passengers could be stranded.

Delays or cancellations to rail and air travel are also possible.

Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phone connection, may be affected.

The Met Office added that some rural communities could be cut off due to the adverse conditions.

The chief forecaster said: “Further snow showers are expected through Tuesday, with the potential for a more organised band of snow to push south-west across many parts of England and Wales through the day.

“There is uncertainty in the extent of snow. However, there is the potential for 5-10 cm of snow in places where showers become more frequent, or in association with the more persistent band of snow.”

Other locations nearby may see much less snow and some could see up to 2cm.

Strong winds will lead to drifting of lying snow, with lightning an additional hazard.

Small parts of Wales, including Wrexham, are also covered by a yellow weather warning for snow on Wednesday.

The Met Office said heavy snow showers were expected in the areas covered, with the warning in place from 12.05am to 11.55pm.

The warnings comes ahead of the arrival of the so-called “Beast from the East” which will see temperatures plummet in the days ahead.

Parts of Wales are forecast to see the mercury drop to around -8°C with wind chill. The cold snap is due to freezing air from Siberia set to hit the UK this week. Weather forecasters are now confidently predicting it will be the coldest spell of this winter and the coldest for at least five years. Most of Wales will see clear and sunny skies throughout the weekend, with little chance of rain but very low temperatures. Wales-wide the Met Office had predicted yesterday’s frosty start and plenty of sunshine for later. A widespread frost was set to quickly develop last night across Wales under clear skies. Forecasters said temperatures will stay low but dry conditions were expected with a minimum temperature of around -4°C. Today is predicted to be another very cold and frosty start but remaining dry with plenty of sun- shine.

In Cardiff today is likely to be sunny, with clear skies and little chance of rain.

Despite the sunshine the “feelslike” temperature will remain at around -1°C all day, dropping to -4°C at around 9pm.

The easterly wind will remain, with gusts reaching up to 30mph during the early afternoon.

Further north, though, could be snow today.

Forecasters said heavy snow showers are almost guaranteed from around 3pm today in Bangor, with a 95% chance from 3pm until 7pm.

The “feels-like” temperature is set to drop massively to around -8°C throughout the day.

From tomorrow to Wednesday the Met Office said Wales will remain bitterly cold, with scattered snow showers and overnight sharp frosts. there
