GATLAND: EXPECT CHANGES FOR ITALY

- MATT SOUTHCOMBE Rugby correspondent matthew.southcombe@walesonline.co.uk

WARREN Gatland has promised to make changes for Wales’ Six Nations clash with Italy in a fortnight as he admitted the Championship was beyond his men following a 37-27 defeat to Ireland in Dublin.

Wales were humbled at the Aviva Stadium, though tries from Gareth Davies, Aaron Shingler and Steff Evans meant the scoreboard flattered the men in red.

Gatland has now admitted his side’s challenge for Championship glory is over as he looks to develop further squad depth with one eye on the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

“We’ve already spoken about needing to see some players in the squad against Italy,” said Gatland.

“It’s important and we want to finish the Championship well. We want to finish in that top three.

“There’s a chance to give some players in the squad (a game) and just see where they are at this level, without making too many changes but we will look to develop the squad.”

Similar to their Twickenham exploits, Wales were chasing a score that would see them snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the final play. But Ireland got what their dominance deserved as Jacob Stockdale picked off Gareth Anscombe’s pass to run in his second try of the afternoon.

Despite having to make almost twice as many tackles as their hosts, Wales were actually in charge of the scoreboard in the build up to the break and Gatland lamented his side’s inability to stay in control of proceedings, falling behind thanks to a Bundee Aki score on the stroke of half time.

“We were the creators of our own demise,” added Gatland.

“In the first half, we were unlucky with a couple of things but against Ireland we spoke about discipline and not allowing them opportunities to get penalties, kick to touch, drive and to squeeze you

“They were very strong in our own 22. Our line defence wasn’t as good as it needed to be.

“We were 13-5 up with 38 minutes on the clock and we couldn’t manage that period to half time, which was disappointing.

“But we just kept playing and scored some great tries. The guys were comfortable.

“Even with that last play, you look at it and if the ball goes to Justin Tipuric out the back then it’s a three on one and you potentially win the game. “That’s how close the game is.” The Six Nations now heads into a rest week before Wales welcome Italy to Cardiff on March 11.
