Roundabout works target ending date

-

THERE’S an end in sight to controversial works being carried out at a roundabout in Caerphilly.

Work began on the Pwll-ypant roundabout, known locally as the Cedar Tree roundabout, in October 2017.

In the run-up to Christmas there was public outcry at the traffic layout, which caused massive tailbacks and delays.

The council agreed to provide additional funding to reopen two lanes around the roundabout and its key approaches during Christmas, as well as later changes to limit disruption.

There were fears that the works would affect the Christmas trade in Caerphilly town centre but Caerphilly council and its main contractor Walters have now reached an agreement for a target completion date before Christmas this year.

Recent changes include the reopening of two lanes of traffic on the roundabout from the Llanbradach bypass.

Deputy leader of Caerphilly council Sean Morgan said: “We are aware of the importance of completing these works as quickly as possible. I would, however, add [that] there can be unforeseen circumstances, particularly regarding the weather.”

Sarah Bruton, owner of Captiva Spa and head of campaign group Keep Caerphilly Moving, said: “This project has caused real economic damage particularly to the smaller traders.”
