SOUTH WALES ASSOCIATION

-

GORSEINON are the new Division One champions in the South Wales Cricket Association after a dominant 10-wicket win at Maesteg Celtic.

Celtic lost the toss and were put in to bat where they posted just 97 before they were bowled out.

Morgan Griffiths notched 21, Morgan Harris hit 17 and Lindsay Harris smacked 16.

Ashley Pass was the leading wicket taker for Gorseinon with 4-23.

There was little competition in the chase as Kieran Howells bagged 79 not out by himself to help Gorseinon knock off the runs with ease and preserve their unbeaten league record.

Gafyn Donovan was also on hand to add 21 to the tally.

Cowbridge had already sealed second place but still saw out the season with victory as they beat Aberdare by five wickets. NEWBRIDGE took charge of the Thomas Carroll South East Wales Cricket League Division One title race after defeating rivals Miskin Manor by eight wickets.

The result sees Newbridge move top of the table and are now three points clear of Miskin with, crucially, a game in hand which is today at home against Abergavenny.

Visitors Miskin won the toss and elected to bat first but were sent back for 151.

Daniel Hay top scored with 39 with Gavin Jones picking up 3-33. Ben Wellington, Ryan Watkins and Scott Greaves all bagged two wickets apiece.

Newbridge skipper Watkins then NEYLAND are the new Thomas Carroll Pembrokeshire Cricket League champions after a huge 124-run win over previous leaders Haverfordwest on a frantic final day in Division One.

Nick Koomen (47) and Scott Jones (41no) helped Neyland, who started the day six points behind leaders Cresselly, reach 224-6 while Patrick Bellerby hit

Aberdare only managed 93 in 43.2 overs before they were bowled out.

Ben Sidney-Jones (26) and Liam Hughes (24) led the way for Aberdare but three-wicket hauls from Brad Evans (3-7) and Tatenda Chiradza (3-14) helped bowl them out.

Ben Wright’s unbeaten half-century (54no) then inspired Cowbridge to an easy victory although Nathan Spain (2-16) and Geoffrey Derrick (2-19) both took a couple of wickets.

Meanwhile, Dafen Welfare picked up their ninth win of the season with a 43-run triumph over Bronwydd.

Dafen skipper Nicky Davies hit 43 while Matthew Evans bagged 30 on their way to 155 all out.

Bronwydd opener James Cale led the way in the chase with 37 but they couldn’t find enough to trouble Dafen as they were skittled out on 112, thanks to the efforts of Jonathan lead the charge in reply, striking seven boundaries in an unbeaten 68 to see his side home while Will Davey was also there at the end on 39 not out.

It means Newbridge, with three games remaining to Miskin’s two, are now in the driving seat for the title and promotion to the South Wales Premier League.

Croesyceiliog put some breathing space between them and the drop zone with a two-wicket home victory over Chepstow.

Batting first Chepstow were all out for 237 with Zak Watson 84 not out while Danny Evans picked up four wickets.

Then 67 not out from Croesy skipper 37.

In reply, Haverfordwest, who surrendered top spot last weekend, only managed to post 110 before they were skittled out.

Dai Davies struck 26 and he was backed up by 25 from Ben Field but Andrew Miller’s five-for ensured Neyland took the win. Randell (4-15).

In other action, Swansea Civil Service ended the season without a win as they lost to fellow relegated side Merthyr Tydfil by 10 runs in a bottom-of-the-table clash.

Meanwhile, Baglan looked to have secured their Division Two status with an eight-wicket win over already relegated Briton Ferry Town on the last day. Taylor Rees stole the show with a superb six-wicket haul, which saw Briton Ferry Town bowled out on just 86. And Josh Lyddon struck a half-century (56) in the chase to give Baglan a much-needed victory.

Morriston’s 27-run defeat to Briton Ferry Steel ensured they fell into the bottom two while Steel finished as runners-up behind Llangennech ahead of Felinfoel, who beat Drefach by 74 runs thanks to Julian Griffiths’ half-century (51). Stewart Roden as well as 70 for Will Smale ensured it would be Croesy who would end victorious.

Elsewhere Pontypridd, who are in the bottom two, saw their survival hopes receive another blow after an eight-wicket home defeat by Tondu – who are all but down themselves.

Cardiff Gymkhana, meanwhile, gave themselves a timely boost in their bid to ensure Division One status for next season as they won by 74 runs at Brecon.

Elsewhere an excellent knock of 110 from Lewis Holley fired Abergavenny to a four-wicket win at Pentyrch while Sudbrook edged out Usk by just one run in their clash.

Gary Lloyd (4-16) and Koomen (1-7) took the other wickets.

Neyland’s title win was then confirmed after Cresselly, who missed out on the title last year, fell to a 24-run defeat to Llangwm.

Elsewhere, Whitland saw out the season with a three-wicket win over Kilgetty.
