JUNGLE PAIR ARE OLD PALS

- JESSICA WALFORD Reporter jessica.walford@walesonline.co.uk

IF YOU think some of the I’m a Celebrity campmates only met for the first time three weeks ago, think again. It turns out that John Barrowman and Nick Knowles were not strangers – they used to tear it up in Cardiff together.

In fact, they both lived in Cardiff where they were working at the time.

Scottish-US star John was working on Torchwood and Nick’s show, DIY SOS, was based in Cardiff.

As a result their paths crossed and they struck up quite the double act it seems.

Back in 2008, we spoke to the duo when they attended the re-opening of Cameo Club in Pontcanna.

Adoptive Welshman Nick, who had an aunt and uncle in Hirwaun, said that, despite living in London at the time, Cardiff was his second home and the first place he went to unwind and enjoy wild nights on the town with John and mutual friend Rhodri Williams.

“It’s always the three of us,” he said.

“I love coming here – it’s got a real London feel and it’s somewhere to come and escape. Cardiff’s got a great buzz to it.

“Cameo was the first place I came when I started filming DIY SOS in Wales and I instantly felt at home.”

He also confessed at the time he had another reason for spending so much time in Wales: “I also love Cardiff women – they’re a bit mad, but I like that.”

Meanwhile John, who had his civil partnership ceremony to architect Scott Gill at St David’s Hotel, said he loved to live in his five-bed home in Sully.

Back in 2009, when he was about to star in West End show Le Cage aux Folles at London’s Playhouse Theatre, he said: “I have a beautiful back garden that looks out to the sea at my home in Sully and there’s a public footpath at the bottom of it.

“My partner Scott and I can often be found enjoying a drink in the sunshine in our back garden and we often get people coming by to say hello. Do I mind? Of course I don’t. I embrace it; if they watch what I do and enjoy what I do, why would I want to act like a diva?

“Anyone coming into my business should never turn their back on the people who helped them get there.”

He also told the Wales on Sunday in 2010: “I’m not moving, I love Wales too much.”
