Wales star Biggar in injury scare

-

DAN Biggar has given Wales coach Warren Gatland an injury scare ahead of next week’s Six Nations clash with England after limping off for Northampton - although his club coach believes he should still be fit for next Saturday’s showdown.

The fly-half departed after just 20 minutes of the Saints’ Premiership clash with Sale Sharks, although the full extent of his injury is not yet clear.

The 29-year-old didn’t seem in great pain as he left the field, but his left knee was already heavily strapped as it has been in other recent matches.

Afterwards, Northampton boss Chris Boyd admitted it was just precautionary and that he did not think there would be any reason why Biggar would not be involved next week.

“There was some pressure by England to leave him on there and see if we could grind him out,” joked Boyd.

“Taking him off was precautionary. He’s just irritated what was a minor thing, so I probably don’t see too much in that.

“He just tweaked it again, he probably could have stayed on, but that at that stage we thought we’d take him out. I’m not a medical man, but I don’t think there’s any reason that he won’t be (in contention for next week).”

The fly-half was withdrawn 10 minutes into Northampton’s Challenge Cup clash with Clermont back in January.

His early departure had raised fears that Biggar wouldn’t be fit for Wales’ opening match of the Six Nations against France, but Boyd played down fears then.

Biggar is currently fighting for the Wales No. 10 jersey with Cardiff Blues’ Gareth Anscombe.

Anscombe started the Six Nations opener against France, before Biggar took over against Italy.
