WOMAN has described how she spent a week trying to solve a “mystery” of why her skin was turning orange before realising she was using tanning wipes instead of make-up remover.

Syl van Riek, from Swansea, described how she could not work out why she was “turning into an Oompa Loompa” with her face and fingers turning orange.

The Gowerton resident then realised, after a discussion with a colleague, that she had accidentally been using self-tan wipes. She had inadvertently bought the wrong ones after picking up a similar packet while shopping without looking at them carefully.

“A week before last, on the Monday, I bought new facial wipes from the pharmacy in Llanelli where I work and never looked at the packet,” the 28-year-old, originally from the Netherlands, said.

“On the Wednesday both of my hands and my face were really orange and I didn’t have a clue where it had come from.

“As far as I was concerned I was not using any new facial products or using anything different. I could not figure it out.

“I was checking everything around my house but I didn’t know what it was.

“On Friday, a week later, I could not sleep. I was so worried about what was going on.

“A colleague of mine asked me: ‘Are you using new facial wipes?’

“I ran to the shop and then found out what the mystery was. I’d bought selftan wipes by mistake.

“I’d never used anything like that before. My hands and my face had turned really orange – I looked like I was turning into an Oompa Loompa!

“My routine in the evenings is to take my make-up off using a wipe and to use a second one to get the rest of it off too so I was using two wipes every night.”

Miss van Riek added that her friends loved the story when she explained what had happened.

“I don’t think they have laughed that much,” she said. “I think I have made everyone really happy with the story. People have been saying it is typical me but it was the same orange packet.

“If you don’t know what is going on it’s a worry – all different things start going round your head. I was wondering whether there was something wrong with my fingers.

“I would say to all the girls to make sure you look at your wipes before you use them!”
