THE MOMENT A BANNED DRIVER RAN OVER A CHILD AND DIDN’T NOTICE
The defendant: Ashley Evans, 28, from Moorhead Close in Splott, Cardiff, admitted causing serious injury while driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and failing to stop.
What happened? Evans ran over a six-year-old girl who had fallen off a scooter then fled before the police arrived. The defendant, who had six previous convictions for driving while disqualified, dragged the child along under his new Vauxhall Astra – leaving her with a fractured collarbone, pelvis and legs.
The evidence: The girl’s family agreed to release the horrific footage, which showed her pinned under the car. We edited the clip to remove the moment of the impact.
What did the judge say? Judge David Wynn Morgan told Evans: “It is a miracle that she was not killed... Your behaviour was cowardly and inhuman.”
The sentence: Evans was jailed for three years and disqualified from driving for five years. He must pass an extended re-test before being allowed behind the wheel again.
CCTV OF KNIFE MURDERERS BRUTALLY ATTACKING A 20-YEAR-OLD MAN
The defendants: Daniel Roberts, 20, who did not have a permanent address, initially denied murder, but changed his plea part-way through a trial. Christopher Griffiths, 30, from Newport Road in Roath, and Awez Jamshaid, 19, from Moore Close in Ely, denied murder and were found guilty by a jury. Saif Shahzad, 19, from Fidlas Road in Cyncoed, denied murder and was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
What happened? Three “cowardly” murderers launched a vicious knife attack on 20-year-old Malaciah Thomas on a residential street in Cardiff. The incident happened in Holmesdale Street and Corporation Road in Grangetown just before 2am on July 23, 2018.
The evidence: South Wales Police released footage showing the moments before and after the attack. During the trial prosecutor Patrick
Harrington QC warned the jury some of the footage would be “harrowing”. The sentences: Roberts was sentenced to custody for life with a minimum term of 25 years. Griffiths was sentenced to life imprisonment with the same minimum term. Jamshaid was sentenced to custody for life with a minimum term of 11 years. Shahzad was sentenced to seven years and six months in a young offender institution.

The defendant: Martin Warnett, 47, from Nant y Wedal in Cathays, Cardiff, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm.
What happened? A shopkeeper had his front teeth knocked out when a neighbour’s son punched him in the face following a “petty” dispute about an advertising board. David Crews, who runs Al Ponte deli in Cardiff with wife Karen, was told the dental treatment would take a year.
The evidence: The victim’s wife Karen said she was working in the back of the shop when the incident happened, adding: “There he was, standing on the step – all bloody.” The incident was caught on CCTV and Karen said she saw her husband spitting his teeth out onto the floor.
The sentence: Warnett was given a 12-month community order requiring him to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and 20 days of a rehabilitation activity. He had to pay £8,000 in compensation plus an £85 victim surcharge. A two-year restraining order was imposed.
POLICE BODY CAM IMAGES OF A “FEARSOME” MACHETE USED BY ROBBERS
The defendants: Tyler Partridge, 25, from Pontalun Close, Barry, and Leighton Drew 27, who did not have a fixed address, admitted robbery. Kyle Richards, 28, from Aneurin Road in Barry, admitted robbery and possessing an offensive weapon.
What happened? A man was left bleeding after being wounded with a machete as three robbers likened to “a pack of wolves” stole his cash, phone and keys. Kevin Gamble was left with a deep cut to his hand when he put his arm up to protect himself during the unprovoked attack in the middle of the afternoon. The incident happened just after 3pm on May 15 in Everard Street in Barry.
The evidence: Judge Eleri Rees described the weapon, which had a 15in blade, as “fearsome”. The Crown Prosecution Service released police body cam footage of the machete being recovered.
The sentences: Richards was jailed for five-and-a-half years while Partridge and Drew were jailed for fourand-a-half years. An order was made for the machete to be destroyed.

The defendant: Louise Griffiths, 46, from Beddick in Greenmeadow, Cwmbran, admitted dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
What happened? Griffiths ploughed into four cyclists on a country road, leaving them for dead. The court heard the incident happened just after 4pm on February 3 on the single carriageway Llanllowell Lane between Usk and Llantrisant.
The evidence: The Crown Prosecution Service released footage of the emergency services at the scene of the collision. A bike and debris can be seen on the road.
The sentence: Griffiths was jailed for 27 months and disqualified from driving for four years from the time of her release.
CCTV IMAGES SHOWING A SEX PREDATOR PROWLING THROUGH THE STREETS
The defendant: Joshua Jolly, 27, from Collwyn Street in Coedely, Tonyrefail, admitted sexual assault and assault with intent to commit a sexual offence. He also admitted two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by penetration.
What happened? Married soldier Jolly sexually assaulted three women in “terrifying” attacks as they walked alone on dark streets in Cardiff in the early hours of the morning. The serviceman targeted the lone victims and used violence to assault them, leaving each woman suffering from profound psychological effects.
