Financial watchdog backs Wrexham AFC sale

-

THE purchase of Wrexham AFC by two Hollywood stars has taken a major step forward after financial watchdogs backed the sale.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia actor Rob McElhenney want to take over the historic Racecourse Ground club, giving the players and fans a huge boost potentially for years to come.

They needed rules to be changed by the Financial Conduct Authority, which agreed to do so.

In a statement, the Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) Board said: “The Wrexham Supporters Trust are pleased to issue the following update regarding the proposed takeover of the club by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

“Last month we informed supporters that contracts had been exchanged and the sale of the club was pending approval of a change to our rules – as voted for by WST members – by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

“Wrexham Supporters Trust are pleased to inform supporters we have today received such approval from the FCA.”

And the WST Board said the sale could be finalised within days.

It added: “Both parties shall now work to formally complete the sale of shares in Wrexham AFC next week.”

The WST Board thanked supporters for “their patience in this process”.

It promised that the Trust would make a full statement once the sale is completed.

The FCA regulates conduct, supervises financial services firms and sets standards.

Excitement has been mounting since news of the takeover bid emerged.

Reynolds and McElhenney have pledged to make a Netflix-style documentary of their journey into club ownership if their takeover bid is successful.
