DETECTIVES have said they are looking into possible Welsh links to the death of a baby found dead on a golf course on Merseyside. The baby boy’s body was discovered at the Brackenwood Golf Course on the Wirral last week.

It is believed the body may have been there for some weeks before it was discovered.

Police are now trying to track down the baby’s mother to provide the appropriate support.

The body of the “full-term baby” was found in a wooded area near the 16th green of the course by two dog walkers.

It’s believed the body had been there for some time, though the results of a post-mortem examination were inconclusive and a forensic test to establish the cause of death are still being carried out.

The force continues to carry out extensive searches of the golf course and the neighbouring area.

They are also carrying out inquiries along with the local authority and health and social care colleagues.

Officers are exploring whether the baby’s mother may live in the North Wales or Cheshire area – due to the close proximity of the course to the M53.

Detective Chief Inspector Judith Blease said: “It is now exactly a week since the baby boy was discovered.

“We know there has been a huge outpouring of sympathy from the local community and we hope that the public will continue to assist our efforts in trying to trace the baby’s mum.

“Our inquiries have been continuing throughout the week and we are working closely with our colleagues in health and social care as it is vital that we are able to find the mum and check on her welfare.

“We believe she will also be able to help us to piece together what happened leading up to the baby’s discovery.

“Being so close to the motorway means there is a possibility that the mum lives outside of Merseyside, possibly in the Cheshire or North Wales area, and our inquiries remain ongoing.

“If mum is reading this then I would ask her to please come forward and speak to us. We can give her the help, support and, if necessary, medical intervention she may need and reunite the baby with his family so that he can be put to rest.”

Anyone who has information which could assist the investigation is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @ CrimestoppersUK anonymously on 0800 555 111.
