DOWNSIZING

Tonight, Channel 4, 12am

In the near future, socially conscious citizens undergo a miniaturis­ing procedure so they can live in micro-communitie­s which are less of a drain on the Earth’s resources. Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) agree to downsize but during the transition surgery, she gets cold feet and he becomes a lonely bachelor in his tiny community. Paul seeks emotional refuge with his neighbour, playboy Dusan Mirkovic (Christoph Waltz), who introduces Paul to fun-loving pal Joris (Udo Kier) and Vietnamese cleaner Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chau). Downsizing is a quirky comedy drama.

After skipping The Bourne Legacy, Matt Damon, left, returns to the franchise. Jason Bourne is living off the grid on the Greek-Albanian border. In Iceland, former contact Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) discovers a secret about Bourne’s former life. CIA protegèe Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) tracks Nicky’s movements, leading to Bourne.

EDDIE THE EAGLE Tuesday, Film4, 6.55pm

Since he was a boy, Eddie (Taron Egerton, left) has had a burning desire to compete in the Olympics. He discovers a loophole that would allow him to compete at the Winter Olympics in the ski jump. Eddie heads to Germany to a ski-jumping training centre run by Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman), who was once booted off the US team.

Wednesday, GREAT! movies, 9pm

Marine Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy, left) arrives home after 14 years’ service and asks his father (Nick Nolte) to train him for a televised mixedmarti­al arts competitio­n with the biggest purse in the sport’s history. Tommy’s cash-strapped brother Brendan (Joel Edgerton) also enters, putting him on a collision course with his sibling.

GOLDENEYE Thursday, ITV4, 8pm

One of the best 007 offerings, this was also a fine debut for Pierce Brosnan (left) as the suave agent who attempts to stop old friend 006 from unleashing havoc with the aid of the eponymous weapon. Sean Bean is terrific as the bad guy, Famke Janssen steals the show as sexy assassin Xenia and Izabella Scorupco is a likeable heroine.

THE DEER HUNTER Friday, BBC2, 11.05pm

A modern classic, depicting six Pennsylvan­ian steel workers and their loved ones whose lives are turned upside down by the Vietnam War. Their bond of friendship and blinkered world view is changed forever when they are called up to fight and are captured by the enemy. Lead Robert De Niro (left) delivers a monumental performanc­e.

RIM: UPRISING Saturday, Channel 4, 11.30pm

This special effects driven sci-fi action sequel is set 10 years after Guillermo del Toro’s hit 2013 film and stars John Boyega, left, as the young pilot of a giant Jaeger robot who tries to protect the world from a new generation of monstrous Kaiju beasts who once again threaten humanity as well as face up to a Jaeger that has gone rogue.
