HOTEL OF THE WEEK

- BY GEMMA ALDRIDGE

The Shard, London, SE1

WHERE AND WHY

It’s hard to miss the iconic 1,016ft Shard, rising out of London’s skyline. But the best views come from inside its luxurious Shangri-La hotel, which starts 410ft up on the building’s 34th floor.

The bedrooms and suites have floor-to-ceiling windows with truly spectacular vistas.

Nestled a stone’s throw from the river, the five-star hotel is walking distance from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern, Southwark Cathedral and plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants.

Also, London Bridge national rail and underground stations are at the foot of the building.

COVID CHECK-IN

Coronavirus procedures were strict but not obstructive.

A one-way walking system and sanitisation stations made it feel safe but didn’t detract from the luxury feel.

ON THE MENU

After some shopping in nearby Borough Market we were ready for afternoon tea in TING restaurant. It didn’t disappoint.

Smoked salmon sandwiches on freshly baked bread and mini carrot cakes were a big hit, but at £59 per head – or £69 with champagne – it’s definitely only for a special occasion.

The evening menu of both traditional Asian and European dishes is equally spectacular.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE

Go up to the viewing gallery at the top of the building for the best views over the city. Back down to earth, wander along Tooley Street and cut through the More London development to Tower Bridge, and cross the river for the Tower of London.
