COULD this be the Welshest ice cream ever?

An award-winning gelato maker has seen its reputation soar for its unique flavours – including bara brith flavour.

And as if a flavour based on the traditional tea bread wasn’t unusual enough, Red Boat Ice Cream Parlour’s flavours also include apple crumble, jelly baby and – for the more intrepid dessert lovers – seafood.

And if it all sounds a bit “Willy Wonka”, rest assured this is a real place – with shops across North Wales.

Red Boat Ice-cream was cofounded by Tony Green, who received extensive training in the art of ice-cream making from the famous Carpigiani University of Italy, before setting up his brand with his wife Lyn.

The Red Boat has five ice cream parlours: Beaumaris, Prestatyn, Menai Bridge, Llangefni, and a brand new location in Caernarfon.

And its inventive offerings – boosted by a £400,000 investment in an ice cream production lab at its Llangefni hub on Anglesey – changes depending on the season.

Last Christmas, it rolled out several flavours including Christmas pudding and brandy, mince pie, white chocolate and cranberry and stollen.

In summer, it even offers seafood flavoured ice cream... if you dare.

It has won a prestigious Great Taste Award for its indulgent tiramisu icecream which was praised by the judges for its smooth and creamy taste.

The curious offerings have seen the business become a Welsh food and drink success story in recent years – with the firm also winning praise for its actions during the pandemic.

During the first few weeks of the initial lockdown, it delivered free icecream to hospitals, care homes and hospices in North Wales.

And it has since launched its first direct-to-customer service, which saw people able to place their orders online.

Tony previously said the company had “exciting plans” for 2021, including “growing our number of stockists not just in Wales and across the region but throughout the UK, launching some fantastic new gelato products and collaborating with a number of other wellknown Welsh brands”.

And the flavours have been a hit with customers.

Sian Williams – writing on food and drink website 2Chill – gave the flagship parlour in Beaumaris five stars.

She said: “Delicious handcrafted gelato and sorbet is served alongside waffles, cakes, paninis and many other tasty treats. Great coffee, too!

“Check out the seasonal flavours as well as year-round favourites such as Bara Brith, Rocky Road and Tiramisu gelato. Highly recommended!”
