Baker aims for fitting farewell to Met chief

-

CARDIFF Met midfielder Chris Baker says all the players are determined to give their manager Christian Edwards the perfect leaving gift, by winning the Nathaniel MG Cup final against Connah’s Quay at Penybont today (2pm).

Edwards has said this season would be his last at the Archers and the final sees the two most recent winners of the competition battle it out for cup glory once again.

Baker says his team-mates are aiming to give their longstanding boss of 13 years something to celebrate in his final campaign in charge.

“I think it’s certainly an extra incentive, but Christian will be the first to say that it’s not about him and it’s about the group,” said Baker.

“If we can execute the gameplan on the day, it would be fantastic to get over the line for him, considering everything he’s done for the club over the last 13 years.

“His record speaks for itself and for him to finish on a high like that would be really special, but we’re not just resting on that as there’s also a place in the top six to play for as well, so there is lots to play for over the coming weeks.”

Baker has experienced both ends of the final before.] In

2018, he was part of the team that lost to TNS and then a year later he eventually got his hands on the trophy with a win over surprise finalists Cambrian & Clydach Vale.

“There’s a lot of excitement in the camp and the boys are relishing a cup final,” he added.

“I think it’s been a really good cup run for us and there’s a good buzz in training, so we’re looking forward to the day.

“It was massive for us to get across the line three years ago and I think that experience will hopefully put us in a really good place when it comes to the final.”

This is set to be a close final on paper with both league games between the two teams this season ending in draws. Cardiff Met are currently in eighth place, while the Nomads sit in sixth.

“Connah’s Quay’s record over the last two years speaks for itself and they’re a fantastic club in the way it’s run,” added Baker.

“I know Andy Morrison’s left, but Craig Harrison’s record in the league is fantastic from his time at TNS, so we know it’s a big challenge ahead but it’s one we’ll relish and prepare right for.

“Hopefully on the day we can turn up, perform well and have a really positive result.”
