UK CITIES WITH LEAST DISPOSABLE INCOME Bumper year for fundraisin­g site

RITAIN’S smallest city has been ranked as the least affordable in the land because it has the highest house prices compared to the lowest wages.

Cathedral city St Davids has come out worst in a cost-of-living survey, where families have the least disposable incomes after paying bills and mortgages.

The picturesqu­e city in Pembrokesh­ire has a population of just 1,600, making it the smallest city in Britain.

And other cathedral cities, including Chichester, Truro, Canterbury and Winchester were also found to squeeze homeowners’ pockets the most.

Those living there do not get bang for their buck after a survey by SmartSurve­y revealed wages are lower than average.

It found median earnings in the city are the lowest in Wales at £1,921 - and “entirely disproport­ional” to the costs of owning a home.

House prices in St Davids average at £450,000, making it the most expensive city to live in Britain compared to earnings.

The figures mean two average-earning homeowners are left with just £863 to spare after paying their mortgage rate and basic bills.

A RECORD £550m has been raised for charities this year through the fundraisin­g platform JustGiving, figures show.

Around 20,000 UK charities benefited from the funds, the highest total amount raised since JustGiving started more than 20 years ago.

Almost one million JustGiving fundraisin­g pages were set up this year, 9% more than last year.

April was the busiest month, with tens of millions of pounds donated to London Marathon fundraiser­s.

Property prices and bills are generally high in the cities while incomes lag behind - making them unrealisti­c for average earners wanting a comfortabl­e life.

The survey found Newcastle was the number one city in the UK where homeowners have the most disposable income. Property prices are £50,000 below average at £210,000 and wages are £482 above average at £2,636.

Mo Naser, SmartSurve­y CEO, said: “If you really have your heart set on living in a quaint cathedral city, you would most likely need to earn your paychecks elsewhere and commute for a quarter of a century to pay off your mortgage.

“Otherwise, you are looking at 25 years with hardly any disposable income left.” were the most popular fundraisin­g activities that people took on in 2023, with more than 65 million miles recorded on fundraiser­s’ Fitbits and Strava apps.

Charitable skydiving challenges increased by 40% and collective­ly raised almost £5.5m.

Fundraisin­g efforts for events such as coffee mornings increased by 127%, raising more than £2m, followed by Movember which increased by 24% and raised almost £800,000.

Around 13% more individual­s grew a mullet for charity this year than in 2022.
