NORTHEAST REWRITES RECORD BOOKS AGAIN

GLAMORGAN SKIPPER REGISTERS HIGHEST EVER FIRST-CLASS SCORE AT LORD’S

GLAMORGAN captain Sam Northeast has rewritten the record books again with an astonishing performance on the opening weekend of the new County Championship season.

On the second day of Glamorgan’s Division Two clash against Middlesex, Northeast recorded the highest first-class score at Lord’s – the home of cricket – with an unbeaten 335 against the hosts.

Northeast’s knock became the highest individual score in the ground’s illustrious 210-year history, surpassing the record held by the great Graham Gooch.

The former England captain had set the previous record of 333 against India in a Test match in 1990.

And some 34 years later in round one of the Vitality County Championship season, the new Glamorgan red ball captain shone in his new role as he led his side to a declaration on 620-3 in their first innings.

For Northeast, it’s a case of picking up where he left off last season, having ended 2023 with an unbeaten knock of 166 against Yorkshire.

He is no stranger to the record books having already recorded an unbeaten 410, the highest-ever score for a Glamorgan player, in a win over Leicestershire in his first season with the club in 2022.

That was the first time a batsman had reached 400 in a first class innings since 2004 when the legendary West Indies star Brian Lara put England to the sword.

Northeast now has the county’s highest and second-highest score.

This one, crucially, is also the highest individual score on arguably the most famous cricket ground in the world.

Coming to the crease when Glamorgan were 16-1, he had put on 129 with Billy Root (67) for the second wicket and 176 with Kieran Carlson (77) for the third wicket.

Finally, he shared an unbroken stand of 299 with Colin Ingram (132 not out).

In his innings, Northeast batted for 412 balls, hitting 36 fours and six sixes.
