In her role as senior curator of the Architecture and Design department at MOMA in New York, the Italian-born Antonelli has become known for her highly analytical, anthropologic approach. Unsurprisingly, she chose Milan as Best City. ‘The Milanese not only love design, but truly live by it,’ she says. ‘They use it, they talk about it, they critique it, they overdo it.’ Putting the city’s design chops aside, however, Antonelli was quick to debunk the myth that the Milanese are perennially elegant. ‘They can be very restrained, and that is understood as good taste. But they can be over the top. And, thankfully, they can also display a modicum of bad taste.’ An example of Antonelli’s good taste, though, is her choice for this year’s Best House – Porky Hefer’s Nest in Namibia. ‘This dream house is like John Lautner meets Black Panther.’
