Ecuadorian Amazon Reader Guy Needham spends time with the Waorani tribe

The highlight: Going hunting for peccaries (pigs) when our Waorani guide, Minewa, spied and shot a spider monkey with a poisoned blow dart. Must see: The amazing wildlife on the two-day river journey to get there. We saw a rare pink river dolphin, a giant anteater, prehistoric caiman, as well as black vultures. Top tip: Keep rain gear and a torch handy all the time. It’s not called the rainforest for nothing!

Cautionary tale: Don’t assume that you’re taking a trip back to the ‘Stone Age’. The Waorani were so modern that they even had access to wifi and electric generators. I wish I’d known... The birdlife was so excessively diverse. I wish I’d brought my monster lens to capture all their beauty. Anything else? Although I was in a lesser-known part of the Amazon Basin, this was the ideal way to get to know about a tribe.
