At this time of year, many of us dream of being out on the water, and it’s been exciting in recent times to see the explosion in cruising options. No, I’m not talking about those huge, floating gin palaces, but rather expedition cruises, river cruises, island hopping and sailing adventures. Narrowing down some of our favourites (p116) was supremely difficult but we hope it will inspire you.
Elsewhere in the mag, we look at the world’s best day walks (p24), go cycling through beautiful Taiwan (p94) and find a heretofore undiscovered and altogether wilder side to Rio de Janeiro (p66).
I’ve just got back from St Helena (p48), having fulfilled a long-held desire to visit this fascinating island. I wasn’t disappointed, but what really helped make it a special trip were the superb guides who gave me insights and memories I wouldn’t have otherwise had. So, a big thank you to Aaron, Anthony, Basil, Derek and Kevin, and I hope we see at least one of you nominated in next year’s World Guide Awards. For this year’s shortlist of contenders, see page 60.
