Not so magical mystery trip

I recently read your news feature on ‘mystery tours’ [ October 2018,

issue 190], and I haven’t made my mind up about them. I believe that on some cruises, passengers can vote on what their next port of call will be. That sounds like fun. But by air? How do you know what clothes or visas you need?

I’m put off by an experience I had in the 1950s. I grew up in Bownesson-windermere, and, one year, we went on holiday to Blackpool. In those days, you could walk along the promenade and see the offices of coach operators offering day trips all around the area. Some offered ‘mystery tours’.

So, we went on one of these. We set off happily, but when the coach turned off the A6 at Heversham, slight doubts began to set in. These doubts increased as we drove along, until the coach pulled into a car park at our destinatio­n... Bowness-on-windermere! Keith Kellett, via email
