Day 1
Starting at Penzance station, make your way to Chapel Street where you can browse the vintage stores and second-hand bookshops.
Steckfensters ( pictured right), notable for having a Dalek in its window, is great for buying vintage clothes, toys and records. Penzance is also home to an art institution that rivals anything a larger city might offer. Set over two sites, Newlyn
Art Gallery and the Exchange (newlynartgallery.co.uk) are devoted to bringing cutting-edge art to the South-west and charge only a nominal entry fee.
From Penzance, take the one-hour coastal walk to Marazion to visit the tidal island of St Michael’s Mount ( pictured top). Topped with a castle, it’s accessed either by a walkway or by boat, depending on the tide. Finish at Ben’s Cornish Kitchen (benscornishkitchen.com), which offers elegant but hearty dishes using fresh local ingredients.
