Journeys to the Other Side of the World David Attenborough Two Roads, £25

In the late 1950s, Attenborough made his name on Zoo Quest, a TV series that followed London Zoo bods on their business. As the series went on, it focused more on capturing these on film in the wild, marking the baby steps of modern wildlife docs. Attenborough also later wrote up these early travels, with this second batch offering not just his clear-eyed insights and but a thrilling time capsule of ‘50s/60s-era Polynesia, Madagascar and Australia.

Adventures for a Lifetime Ed Stafford Collins, £19

When not listing bare-cheeked around a desert island (we miss Naked and Marooned ), Ed Stafford also has a line in DIY travel books for those looking for something (much) more challenging for their next adventure: it is bursting with big ideas, from wild climbs to monster drives to tracking a river to its source, but also small practical tips that can be used for your regular travels. Naked joy!

50 Camels and She’s Yours Various writers Feedaread, £7.99/£3.99 (ebook)

Full disclosure: one of the writers in this five-woman, five-continent anthology is long-time Wanderlust health guru Dr Jane WilsonHowarth. But having laid our cards on the table, this is still a refreshingly honest collection of travel vignettes. Chapters shift easily from ‘evacuating’ into yoghurt pots to touching local encounters, all made possible by the relentless curiosity of five remarkable people.

1001 Walks/1001 Road Trips to Experience Before You Die Barry Stone/darryl Sleath Cassell, both £20

Books like these aren’t there to be read cover to cover, nor could you cart them around the world with you. No, these two hefty titles are all about travel inspiration and options – lots and lots of options. Scour through, make a list. A long list.
