Back in April 2017, Costa Rica’s popular Poás volcano ( right) erupted, sending a column of smoke some 500m into the air. The surrounding park quickly closed, leaving travellers expecting to hike the dense cloud forest surrounding the world’s second-largest volcano crater gazing on in dismay.
