Another Fine Mess: Across Trumpland in a Model T Ford Tim Moore Two Roads, £25

Since the ‘Trum-pocalypse’ hit in 2016, there’s been no shortage of journos traipsing Middle America to work out how and generally acting as if auditioning for chief mourner at civilisation’s wake. Moore has none of that – he hurtles along like a game whirlwind, part-pg Wodehouse, part-louis Theroux. His travels are high on hi-jinx, low on the low politics, and reveal that there’s still plenty of gas in the tank for travellers keen on a classic road trip in an equally classic motor.

Thinking on my Feet Kate Humble Aster, £20

Not all journeys need to be epic. This diary of a year’s worth of mindful rambles is the presenter’s tribute to the sheer pleasure – and multitude of benefits, both mental and physical – of a wander. Mostly taking her around her adopted Welsh homeland, these are 365 days of inspiration to get out and, sometimes literally, smell the flowers.

Lands of the Lost Borders Kate Harris Harper 360, £20

The Silk Road is rapidly regaining its popularity with travellers, drawn like Kate Harris to the romance and challenge of journeying along some of the planet’s most remote routes. Following Harris’ lengthy bike ride, this exciting, lyrical debut will not deter further explorers – although they may think twice about using a bicycle to do it.

DK Eyewitness 2019 Guides Various authors DK, from £13

We’ve always had a soft spot for Dorling Kindersley’s colourful guides (now 25 years old). Splashy illustrations, historical heft, map heavy – it’s like having a tour guide in your pocket; the kind that revels in the questions you want to ask and (best of all) never gets lost. A new-look front section loaded with ideas (Amsterdam after dark, filmic Italy) only makes us love them all the more.
