When it comes to uncovering hidden gems on your travels, it’s the locals who know best. Their stories and insider knowledge help unlock the secrets of each destination – whether that’s the best place to eat in Greece (on the shore, it turns out, tucking into freshly grilled fish from a recent catch), or exactly where to stand to see the most spectacular Northern Lights (68.88378° N, 15.60273° E, according to Exodus local guide, Nigel).

That’s why tour operator Exodus Travels only use local people as their guides – each knowledgeable and passionate about their own countries, taking you to the very heart and soul of the destination you’re exploring. Santorini and Paros are zigzagged with hiking trails running between ice-white villages, sun-bleached ruins and authentic taverns only the locals know about. The walks are gentle, punctuated with frequent stops to sample the islands’ cuisine and explore little-visited archaeological sites. Each day ends with a sunset over the calm ocean – a true taste of what life on the Greek islands is all about. Local tip: “Make sure you try saganaki – fried cheese wrapped in filo pastry and smothered in lemon juice and honey. It’s found across Greece, but in Santorini the locals often swap the lemon juice for brandy.” — Thannos, Exodus local guide. How to go: Exodus Travels’ eight-day Walking on the Greek Islands trip crosses Naxos, Santorini and Paros islands, with accommodation, return flights and breakfast. From £1,199 per person.

ARCTIC LIGHTS & WHALES IN NORWAY

Found off the coast of northern Norway, the Vesteralen Islands are little short of spectacular. This remote archipelago in the Arctic Circle offers a mix of fjord and mountain – the area teems with wildlife, including reindeer, moose, sea otters and seals. You’ll head onto the water to spot whales, eat freshly-caught fish over a campfire and, most importantly, try and catch a display of the swirling northern lights. Local tip: “One of the most relaxing ways to spend an afternoon is fishing through a hole in the ice. If you’re successful, a grilled Arctic char (an orange-bellied freshwater fish) makes for a delicious dinner as the sky explodes into luminescence above you.” — Nigel, Exodus local guide. How to go: Exodus’ four-night Northern Norway Arctic Lights & Whales trip includes all accommodation, return flights and most meals, plus one of the best chances to spot the aurora. From £2,149 per person.

WILD COSTA RICAN ADVENTURES

Visitors traversing narrow Costa Rica will swiftly move from rainforest to mountain to coast, getting to climb volcanos, explore little-visited national parks and paddle across natural emerald pools along the way. The action overhead is just as wild as the landscapes, with sloths, howler monkeys and toucans raucously rubbing shoulders above you in the canopies. At the end of the day, soak in a hot spring bath as you listen to the rainforest chorus harmonise around you. Local tip: “Take an early morning boat trip on the Tortuguero waterways. At dawn, the wildlife is at its most active – you are likely to encounter monkeys, caiman, iguanas, butterflies and more. This is also the most important nesting site in the Western Hemisphere for the endangered green turtle, which nests here from July to October.” – José, Exodus local guide. How to go: Exodus Travels’ 14-night Discover Costa Rica trip includes all accommodation, including rainforest eco-lodges, as well as return flights and most meals. From £2,899 per person.
