TURN YOUR NEXT TRIP INTO A PERFECT TRAVEL PITCH Athe

-

QI’ve been frustrated in my attempts to become a travel writer. When approaching my next trip, what should I consider when turning it into a pitch? Ruth Greenwood, via email

secret is to make life easy for your editor. Find out what they like and offer it to them. Do it in an email that’s short and sharply written, sent many months ahead, and you’re over halfway there.

So read the publication and work out what they like. Adventure travel? Luxury? Family? What style and length of article do they run? Then package your idea to match.

Also remember that a pitch needs an ‘angle’, or theme. The world is full of lovely locations, but only certain activities or experiences will interest readers. If you’re planning to visit Cuba, think of the angles you’d find there. A road trip in a 1950s Cadillac, or learning to salsa are much more interesting ideas than a vague ‘article about Cuba’.

And finally, keep at it. Be patient, persistent and professional, and – hopefully – you’ll find your niche. Jonathan Lorie

2LAXMI PUJA The peak of the festival season in Nepal is October/ November and includes Laxmi Puja, when people draw powder mandalas and set out candles ( pictured) to guide the goddess of wealth into their homes. Try a homestay for the best experience of Nepali celebrations.
