Wanderlust Travel Magazine (UK)

Contributors

Wanderlust is brought to life by people from all over the planet. Here are just some of the individuals who helped to create this issue – and their responsible travel tips…

-

Alex Treadway

Cover photographer Alex’s 15-year career reflects a passion for the world around him. From capturing life in remote Nepalese hospitals to snapping stories in the Himalaya mountains, he loves a challenge.

My save-the-world tip: “I always carry a steel bottle, as synthetic fibres leach microplastics into the environment. The app ‘Good On You’ is great – it rates fashion brands on eco impact and suggests ethical alternatives, too.”

Sara Wheeler Interview

Sara’s long been drawn to the planet’s most extreme places – she was the first female writer-in-residence at the South Pole, and spent seven months researching in Antarctica. Her latest book sees her cross eight of Russia’s time zones on the trail of its literary greats (p34).

My save-the-world tip: “I don’t have a car – I get trains everywhere in the UK. And I’ve got a metal water bottle and reuseable coffee cup.”

David Back Viewfinder

The late David Back worked in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley in the 1980s when the region’s black rhinos were poached out. A decade ago, while working as an architect, he set up a fund to translocate a new population there. Many readers will remember him judging Wanderlust’s World Guide Awards – a subject close to his heart.

Paul Clammer Dispatches

Rum and hot pepper sauce fills Paul’s kitchen cabinets, so the author of Lonely Planet’s Jamaica guide always has a taste of his favourite island. This issue, he uncovers a new side to its national treasure, Bob Marley (p42).

My save-the-world tip: “Don’t be unreasonable when bargaining for goods in poor countries. The price may be the cost of a drink to you, but a whole family meal to the vendor.”

Lucy Abel Smith Q&A

Blue Guide writer Lucy has toured Romania since Communist times, mixing with writers and artists alike. In this issue, she advises readers to ditch the Dracula references and soak up the culture in its rural reaches (p148).

My save-the-world tip: “When visiting minority churches, try to leave a donation – what you leave can go a long way in Romania. And ask before you take photos, too – some people don’t like it.”

Hazel Plush Responsible travel supplement

Travel journalist Hazel penned this issue’s ‘25 Ways to Save the Planet’ guide – a topic that she cares dearly about and a very absorbing read.

My save-the-world tip: “In the Philippines recently, I went island-hopping with Tao (taophilippines.com): they do everything from organic farming to supporting remote communities. It was incredible to be a small part of their mission.”
