Grizzly new frontier
I enjoy reading your ‘travel lists’ and ’50 Best New Trips for 2020’ [issue 203/February 2020] was no exception. I love ticking off places I’ve been to and finding inspiration for future journeys so I was delighted to see somewhere I had already visited in the ‘New Frontier’ section. I felt like a true pioneer!
In June last year, I sailed to Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary from Prince Rupert, on British Columbia’s north-west coast. The seven hour round trip was worth it for the scenery alone.
When we glided up the serene sanctuary inlet we encountered ten bears dotted along the beaches, including a mother with two cubs. The grizzlies feed on shoreline sedge at that time of year making sightings practically guaranteed. I didn’t see any more of the Haida Gwaii archipelago on that trip but it’s definitely on my list!
