EXPLORING TABLE MOUNTAIN
Enjoy the diverse fruits of the ‘Mother City’...
SUNRISE HIKE UP LION’S HEAD
Lion’s Head is one of the city’s favourite hiking spots, especially for watching sunrise from the peak. It’s a short, steep climb to top, half an hour to an hour – but be aware that it does involve some ladders.
There are over 350 trails that wind up and around Table Mountain National Park, looping around the mountain or straight up the gorges. Hiking, trail running, climbing and mountain biking are all wildly popular with Capetonians. For visitors, it’s best to go with a group or a guide who knows the mountain, its extremely variable weather conditions and safety precautions. Check out social media to find who’s going where – meetup.com is a great place to find hiking groups. If you’re visiting between January and March, head to the top of the mountain to scout for the protected disa orchids along the shaded streams.
CONSTANTIA WINE ROUTE
Some of South Africa’s oldest wine farms are just 20 minutes outside Cape Town. Take a long lunch at one of the vineyards, such as Glen Constantia, with its glorious vines and mountain views.
DISTRICT SIX MUSEUM
This collection of photographs, letters and artefacts document the apartheid regime’s forcible removal of residents from the inner-city suburb in the 1970s; tours from ex-residents are available. www.districtsix.co.za
